life change?

Books that changed my life forever:

1. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
2. Some book I read as a teenager which, I think, was the only book to
ever make me cry like a baby :-)

...can't think of any more right now. Will investigate my brain a bit more...

It's about a girl my age (at the time) who gets Leukemia and about her life.

No one has mentined The Holy Bible?! Interesting. I am still thinking. "Gods Graves and Scholars" was mine I think but I never did become an archaeologist...

Mike, your #2 above reminded me of a book I read in High School that changed my life. Until I read it, my reading was limited to sci-fi/fantasy, but my English teacher got tired of those book reviews and forced me to expand my horizons. So I read DEATH BE NOT PROUD, by John Gunther. It remains one of the most poignant books I've ever read. Mr. Gunther is (was?) a noted travel journalist, author of INSIDE U.S.A, INSIDE SOUTH AMERICA, INSIDE AUSTRALIA, among others. DEATH BE NOT PROUD is a memoir, a chronicle of his young son's battle with a brain tumor that took his life at age 17. The boy was a certified genius; he corresponded with Albert Einstein and had been accepted to Harvard AND Yale. The book will break your heart, but it will also remind you of the phenomenal strength of the human spirit.

It was once out of print, but has been reprinted in hardcover and paperback. Amazon has both in stock.

Death be not Proud was required reading when I was in middle school. It was pretty heavy compared to most of the stuff we had to read.

This topic is so broad! I think most of the books I read somehow change my world view or inner view...it's rare that one doesn't make some kind of mark on my psyche.

I do not know if anyone would find any sense in this, but The English Patient changed my idea on love between a man and a woman. The beauty and dreamlike quality of the book speaks for itself, yet there are so many deeper levels...

I can't think of any books that changed my life, but oddly enough I can think of a magazine and an article from another magazine that changed my life.

The magazine that changed my life was the National Geographic Energy Supplement in February 1981. My brother had just joined the Society (by subscribing to the magazine) that month and he got it along with the February '81 issue. This was mind-blowing stuff for the 10-year old boy I was then. It told me that the world was eventually going to run out of gasolene, that there were other resources (coal, tar sands, solar & wind power, even Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion), that there were ways to slow the depletion down, that cars were highly inefficient and there were a lot of ways to make them use less (many of which have since come to pass) etc. etc.

In the same vein, I read an article in an old Motor Trend magazine (a 1981 issue I read in '85 or '86) about a single seat 3-wheeler. The line just below the headline said: "Why buy a carriage when you only need a horse?" This energy-crisis era catchphrase cemented my fascination with motorcycles and microcars (the best microcar design I have ever heard of is the Messerschmitt KR200, at least in my opinion...) and may be part of what led me to study mechanical engineering.

The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart set me off on a 5 year search for Arthur and even more about Merlin - and ended in a Master's thesis in Celtic studies despite being only a small part of a very lengthy treatise on prehistoric Britain before any of the numerous books available now were written.

Read the quadrilogy and enjoy some very stirring reading. My whole family read it from teenager to PhD we all loved them.

Hi all
Sorry for being gone so long - I will try to
come up with a hopefuly reasonable answer
- hard to come up with a good -short- answer
about how reading that book affected my general
attude about things.
