What is the awfulest, worst, nastiest book you ever read?
What is the baddest book you *never* read? Was it really that bad?

_Seeds of Change_ by Thomas F. Monteleone (1975), a truly pathetic science fiction nivel.

I know this thread is a little old but I thought I'd pipe in about a set of books I've seen called "It was a Dark and Stormy Night."
The books are first sentences only of truly bad novels. I should get the book out, I'm not describing it well.
The sentences are awful -- some run ons, some just hilarious. It's a fun read and it can stir up your imagination (yes, even thinking about
bad literature can help when you feel uncreative).
Has anyone else out there seen these? Anyone else have some much-hated book?

OK, now I've intrigued myself enough to go and actually look up the book.
In case anyone is interested, it is called "It was a Dark & stormy Night,
the Best (?) from the Bulwer-Lytton Contest" compiled by scott Rice.
The subtitle is, "the funniest opening sentences from the worst novels
never written." The contest is named for the author who actually penned
the words Snoopy uses when writing.
An example: "Dawn Esterbrooke looked lovingly upon the gifts which her
lifelong childhood friends brought to her wedding shower, but inside her
guts churned like an overripe peach in a blender because only two hours
earlier she had left a motel with her best friend's homosexual father."
This fine example is credited to Steve Garman of Pensacola FL. Ta da.

Not here, although I think aubrey has been in the movie and tv conferences with me.
So, can I trash Moby Dick here with impunity? It's the worst book I've tried and tried again to read, yet never managed to really plow through. Thank heavens for Cliff's Notes. But even now, as a mature (somewhat mature) adult without deadlines and quizzes, I haven't managed to get into this book.
That's all my ranting for today.

what about by a fanatic?
I rather enjoy reading fanatical works. Sometimes the twain shall meet!
Ever read VOX? SAme author as DAMAGE. I certainly prefer the latter as a book and refused to see the movie. Oh. Another odd one, certainly not all bad was Giraffe. About a young man's obsession sexually as much as sensually a giraffe. If I were to tell you too much more you might be afraid to read it. And if I were to tell you I enjoyed it, you might have an unsavory opinion of my tastes (one of them anyway) in literature.
I enjoy variety in my written art as much as I enjoy diversity in music and visual presentations. All mix and make for a very interesting slant on life.

i define "unsavory tastes" as being a predilection for milton friedman... all else requires a look (in spite of native "provincialism", and "squeamishness")... have read neither of these books, but will look them over, and get back with you... thanks...

Hi all
Possum Perkins would have to be my most boring book. It is about an Australian girl and her pet possum in an outback town. Although I read it for Year 8 English I clearly remember there being only one vaguely interesting segment, where the girl and her father have an argument. For boredom I give it 8/10.

I also read Miguel Street by V.S. Naipaul which was GREAT! Because of that book, I also read The Mystic Masseur by the same author. That was also GREAT! BUT when I tried to read Guerrillas, I quit at chapter 2 or 3.

I was talking about the movie. I have not read Different Seasons, which is another collection of Stephen King's short stories. These include "The Body", on which the movie Stand By Me is based, and "Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption", the basis of the movie The Shawshank Redemption.

I really hated The Light That Failed by Kipling. I thought it was misogynistic and somehow seemed to be full of authorial self-pity.

Ancient Kentucke Inscriptions by Jim Michael. It is so seriously full of falsehoods and non-data that it should never have left his desk.

Yeah it is an artsy way they think the ancienct Celts spelled it. Just another of the pipedreams being foisted off on the innocent public. One guy said the only thing he'd use it for was toilet paper but the paper wasn't good enough. That about sums it up.

Yup! From your indo European background you are definitely a soap using Celt. Baths were to sweat in. The Celts used soap and running streams. Winter it must have been pretty rugged out there.

as soon as wine turned to vinegar it killed the fermentation ergo it was sterile. Yup it makes good antiseptic if not a good drink.

I just attempted to read North by Northanger, or the Shades of Pemberley: A Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery by Carrie Bebris. It's the third in her Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery Series. The first 2 books were farily decent, but this one is just awful! The plotting is about the equivalant of what you'd find in a ScobyDoo cartoon (and just about as believeable), and what she does to the personalities of the characters is just criminal!
Now, I know when I read a modern continuation of Austen's works, I'm not going to get anything close to her genius -but really.... if you're going to call your characters Mr. & Mrs. Darcy, you should at aleast attempt to model their behavior after Jane's orignals!
Picture this:
Darcy is arrested on pathetically obvious trumphed up charges (made in an anomous letter, no less, and sent to a county bumpkin of a magistrate)and his instructions to Lizzy when he's to be imprisioned for 5 or 6 months? "Don't visit me." Not "send for our solisitor!", or "send an express to Col. Fitzwilliam!" or even an attempt at reasurance, with a Baldric-like "I have a plan..." (-and trust me, Baldric's capacity for planning is astronomical compaired to this pathically week minded Darcy!) His entire defense? "I didn't do it." I kid you not. And the response by the magistrate? "But rich fancy gentleman like yourself are known to lie." so his plan is to stick one of the richest men in England in the goal for several months -without representation.
anyway... if you're a fan of Jane Austen or like a good mystery, stay far away from this book.
