This topic will show you one way to get a tech job in Austin, Texas.
This is where I start my job search.
I'll keep you posted on the results and show you the techniques I used to
hopefully land a high tech job in a scarce high tech market. It's going
to be tough. And there's no guarantee of success.

Step one.
Contact the two dozen or so recruiting companies and temp agencies.
I've gotten many jobs from this source before at IBM, Tivoli, Haystack
Labs, Sematech, and other very good companies. These are great companies
and they treat you and pay you well.
I had very good experiences at all these places.

A job in tech sales isn't what it used to be. Ask me. I once may have been the top computer salesman in Austin with my Sematech account. I easily had a 6 figure salary back then.
It all started when I walked into Entre Computer and met Bill Games and Brian Gratz. They told me I wasn't very slick and wouldn't do very well at it. But at the time I was a comparative super geek and I had stuff no one else had. I had a 24" monitor hooked up to a Mac IICX running MS Works and I was doing hypertext when hypertext wasn't cool.
Anyway, about a month or two on the job I get a call from some guy named Jay at some company called Sematech. He said he needed about 80 computers and no one else in town would pay much attention to him. The best they could do was drop off boxes at his doorstep.
Wow, I thought. 80 computers. I did the match.
er, the math.
So I immediately set up an appointment with Jay Cash and the systems guys frommIntel and Motorola and worked up a plan for computer and network deployment. I got Compaq and IBM to send me their best demo units and set them up in the hospitality room at the Four Seasons. The room at the Four Seasons had a great view across the South of the Sematech building on top of the hill.
When I first showed up at Entre, I made a bet with Bill Games. I told him that I would sell over a million bucks worth of computers and he laughed. Then I asked him, if I sell over a million dollars worth, will you send me and my wife to the Caribbean, all expenses paid for ten days. He took me on.
Needless to say I won that bet and had a string of successful years being the major vendor at Sematech. It was a very prosperous time. And Joy and I had a wonderful time in the Grand Cayman Islands for ten days.
But, those days are over.
Until about 2001, selling software, hardware and tech services was a bout the best paying gig in central Texas.
But just wait till 2008. I'll be back.
