Riette asked about James Taylor, and he just happens to be coming to town:
Throughout the stormy tossing and turning of American pop since the late
'60s, James Taylor has remained the ballast, keeping the ship upright and
on course. Now, in what has become the highlight of the summer concert
season, James Taylor kicked off his 46-city tour and will perform in
Austin at the Frank Erwin Center on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Much of Taylor's repertoire has been captured on his two most recent
albums: James Taylor Live, a 1992 double disc live album and its single
disc version, James Taylor (Best Live), released in 1994. Before these
two great albums, New Moon Shine, his other release in the '90s once
again showed his peerless mastery of unforgettable melodies and wise,
witty lyrics.
New Moon Shine reteams James with producer Don Grolnick and a host of
world-class musicians such as saxophonists Branford Marsalis, Michael
Bredker and Randy and Tony Levin, and James' long-time friend and
colleague Danny Kortchmar, who co-wrote and co-produced two tracks. James
wrote or co-wrote all but two songs. "It took me a long time to write
these," says James. "The way I write is slowly changing to a more studied
craft, rather than a spontaneous springing forth. Songs start quickly but
finishing them up takes a long time."
That deliberation shows in the album's finely-wrought arrangements and
reflective sentiments. "Copperline," the premiere single, was co-written
by James and noted southern author Reynolds Price. The
you-can't-go-home-again theme, underscored by fiddle and dobro, sets the
tone of the album. "Down in the Hole," a disquieting rocker comparing
depression to life under the ground, features a wild doo-wop break, while
a hot horn section punctuates a clever R&B elegy to love lost in "(I've
Got To) Stop Thinking 'Bout That."
"Shed a Little Light" is a beautiful chorale inspired by the Emmy-winning
PBS series, "Eyes On the Prize," which retold the story of the civil
rights movement. Here James celebrates the moments of triumph even though
the ultimate goals of that era are yet to be realized. "Frozen Man" is a
charming and quirky fairytale about a 19th century British mariner lost
at sea near the Arctic Circle. Retrieved from the permafrost, he's thawed
and revived, only to find his world has died out a hundred years before.
"It turns out my own Scottish ancestor, also named James Taylor, was lost
at sea on his way to America," notes Taylor, "though I didn't learn of
that until after I wrote the song."
The album ends with a sublime version of the folk standard, "The Water Is
Wide." Says James, "I used to perform this song when I was a young
folk-singer in New York." Giving New Moon Shine a grace and symmetry, the
song is performed on acoustic instruments including the fiddle and dobro,
ending the album much as it began.
In a way, the same can be said of James Taylor himself. No less an
observer than Sting said not long ago of James, "He's a complete natural
and a complete original immune to fashion." James himself, simply says
"the top of the charts is fine, but it's an odd goal if you're a
musician." Nevertheless, James Taylor is no stranger to the top of the
charts. Since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1969, he has
enjoyed extravagant success with over a dozen albums.
After the release of Never Die Young, in 1988, Taylor embarked on a
triumphant tour of American and saw a taped full-length concert
performance become one of the most popular specials run on PBS that
winter. As much as he's known for his recordings, James has been a
perennially popular live entertainer. "You have to perform in real time
with real musicians," he notes. "Of course some, cantelever twenty years
beyond their time, standing there like waxed fruit. But with others like
Ray Charles, the thrill ain't gone."
The same is true of James Taylor, who continually inspires new
generations of fans with his concerts and albums. There aren't that many
standards of quality left these days, but James Taylor surely exemplifies
the highest of them, and 30 years of success proves it.
Tickets for James Taylor at the Frank Erwin Center on Tuesday, October 1
at 7:30 p.m. are $24.50 and $27.50 and are on sale now at all UTTM

That sounds just absolutely brilliant. Would have loved to have gone. Not least because of that menu!!
But the only concert I'm going to is 'Modern Talking' - big trip down teeny memory lane, that is. Sonja is ready to scratch my eyes out with jealousy, so I promised I'd be really obnoxious, push my way to the very front and fill up as many films as I can withing the space of two hours. Still wondering if I should throw underwear at them....

If ever a group called, Modern Talking should visit you over there, GO. Don't know if they ever became famous in America, but they're a cult over here. Their music is crap, their lyrics are crap, but their concerts are a BLAST!!!! I went last night, and had a fantastic time. These two guys have the most wonderful stage personalities, are mega handsome, and the concert was one HUGE party, and live, their music is hypnotic - they sing VERY well live. My sister and I used to be big fans at teenies, then
they split up, and just got back together again beginning of this year. I WISH Sonja had been here to see it! Even Chris had a good time, and he usually growls when I drag him to pop concerts.

Well, all their songs have exactly the same deep, heavy beat, which makes it hypnotic after a while. And although their tunes and lyrics all sound roughly the same, they're really fun and full of energy. But I think their secret lies in their charisma. They are the two most down to earth, relaxed singers I've ever seen live, and therefore the crowd is relaxed as well, and the whole thing just turns into a big, big party. Wait, I'll see if I can post a picture of them - they're mega sexy!

Oh, but if you knew Prinzenbar... In the midst of St. Pauli, Hamburgs infamous entertainment district, it used to be a red-light affair with lots of decadent stucco baby angels (putti ?) and mirrors. Superstar had an evening there, when the mag did the tour in '97, and it's a great location. Sure fitting to kick the tour off there!
(As I leave for Hamburg tomorrow, maybe I even go there! Other offers: Alter Schilleroper, Mutter, Meanie Bar)

I'm afraid it was only called the Star Club.
But at least they didn't call it the Superstar Club.
I opened there for the Beatles just a few times, 10 or 12, I'd say.
Since I was the warm-up band, I would bring out 4 steam heaters
and play them.
They made wonderful sounds, which could be somewhat orchestrated with a
spray hose.
All the Beatles, even George and John and Paul and Ringo, loved my band of steam heaters.
Can't say as I blame 'em.
Actually that's all I have to report at this time.

They adopted me as their pet hamster.
Then I escaped the cage they put me in, even though it had lotsa fun
things inside it to play with like fake lettuce and this circular ladder
that I'd run on its rungs and make it spin and stuff,
but like I say, I squirmed and wriggled outta that cage one dark and
storied night and I ran away and got married....to boredom and lived the
rest of my life accordingly.
Can't say as I blame me.
Actually that's all I have to report at this time.

There was Widespread Panic at the Backyard last night.
It's an outdoor venue out on Bee Caves Road.
Shades of the Grateful dead. Long rambling songs that merged together.
7,000 retro looking people were jammed in to the place according to Debra (kb5sfl) and Mark, my amateur radio buddies who saw it.
They called them a "jam band", Mark had never heard of that before.
String Cheese Incident were also very good, according to Mark and Debra. They played at a different venue.

Hi Paul
I did not know where to put this but seeing that G W BUSH had
a bit to do with Texas < lol >I put it here
Genealogists discover President's royal connections
By Ananova
Prince William and George W Bush are 17th cousins, according to genealogists.
The heir to the throne and the US President can trace a common ancestry back to 15th century Northamptonshire squire Henry Spencer.
His younger son William founded the line that eventually produced wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill and Diana, Princess of Wales.
Descendants of Henry Spencer's older son, John, included Anne Marbury, who moved from Lincolnshire to Massachusetts during the 1600s.
She was later banished for religious reasons and killed by native Americans but a direct descendent of hers, Harriet Fay, married James Bush, the great-great grandfather of the President.
Mr Bush is a great admirer of Sir Winston and keeps a bust of the former Prime Minister on his desk at the White House.
The link between the families was made by researchers at US genealogy company MyFamily.com, which is collaborating with the Public Record Office in London on publishing census returns for England and Wales from 1841 to 1901 on-line.
Details of Mr Bush's royal connections will be made available on-line.
A spokeswoman for MyFamily.com says the discovery about the President's connections to the royals was only made recently, and research is continuing to find out more about Henry Spencer, who lived in Badby between 1420 and 1478.

Actually, there's a Bush topic or two in the politics conference. Maybe you could transplant it there or allow me to, trying to quench the flames here a bit!

"If you read the first part you might understand why I put
it here, you see I am a bit dumb, did you go to my School?" - Joe
So I look at the beginning of the post and read:
"Hi Paul
I did not know where to put this but seeing that G W BUSH had
a bit to do with Texas < lol >I put it here" - Joe
Right. The topic is titled: "concerts, gigs and events in Austin and other parts of earth", and this entry has nothing to do with concerts, gigs, or Austin. It seems that when Joe says he is a bit dumb he exhibits the pinnacle of the art of understatement.

to deny one's past is neither logical nor constructive (it can lead to
all kinds of unhealthy behaviors, disorders, etc...)...
joe seemed to be reaching out to you, sam...
whatever may've happened all those years ago- i dunno, maybe you used
to take his lunch money or something, it really doesn't matter- he seems
willing to put it all behind, in the spirit of comradeship, or whatever...
shouldn't you really do the same?

Upcoming events in Austin, Texas include the Austin History Center
reading on June 24 at 7 PM. I'll be reading and doing a Q&A. That's the
neat old art decoish building next door to the central, or John Henry
Faulk Library. On July 16, my new wave supergroup, Class of 78, will
play the Hole in the Wall. It will be my first gig at the Hole, believe
it or not.
On Sunday July 18, I'll be at Barnes & Noble Arboretum, since the last
gig there was all but rained out. We had a handful of hardy souls,
which was a nice testament, but the store was sure we could draw a big
crowd next time so they gave me another date.

1. Exiled Tibetans demand freedom from China
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Bhopal, August 09, 2005 (ANI) Hundreds of exiled Tibetans in India took to streets today demanding China to quit the Tibet.
The protest by the Council for Tibet Freedom marks the anniversary of Quit India movement against the British colonial rulers.
The activist say their agitation is symbolic of the historic movement and they hope it culminates in justice for Tibet.
" On this day Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi started the uprising in India against the British Government. Today under the banner of Council for Tibet Freedom we have also started this quit Tibet movement. As part of this movement we will take out processions against China all round the year. China has forcefully occupied Tibet and is ill-treating the people of Tibet. Such small and large scale processions are being organised in the whole country from Delhi to the Chinese embassy," said Dr. Mahesh Yadav, President Council for Tibet Freedom.
Yadav added, "As per the traditions this protest too is for supporting our holiness the Dalai Lama, who has always followed Mahatma Gandhi's footsteps of non-violence and also to support the innocent people of Tibet. Through our movement we want to divert China's attention that they should quit Tibet and do away with the ill treatment on the people of Tibet. we also want to request all the countries not to keep any sort of business or cultural relations with China because of what China is doing in Tibet."
International pressure has increased on China in recent years forcing it to hold a fresh dialogue between envoys of Dalai Lama.
Beijing resumed dialogue on the future of the region with representatives of the Tibetan spiritual leader in 2002 after it was suspended in 1993.
The talks have been shrouded in secrecy and the July meeting at the Chinese embassy in Berne, Switzerland, was also not announced in advance.

2. Dalai Lama to speak at UT
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Austin Business Journal
Tuesday, August 09, 2005
The University of Texas will bring 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner and exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama to the Austin campus Sept. 20.
The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, will speak at the Frank Erwin Center in a lecture sponsored by the university's Texas Union Lectureship. Admission is free with a ticket.
"The Texas Union is pleased to bring His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the university for his first visit to Austin," says Andy Smith, director of the Texas Union. "It will be a unique opportunity for our students and the community to hear a public talk by such a noted and respected international figure."
Tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at 7 a.m. Sept. 6. The general public can obtain tickets at the Erwin Center box office, and people affiliated with the university can get tickets at the Texas Union Student Events Center ticket office.

3. London bishop in Tibet row
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
- By Our London Correspondent
The Asian Age, India
London, Aug. 9, 2005: The Bishop of London is at the centre of an unholy row after he participated in a ceremony with the disputed 17th Karmapa during his visit to London.
Right Reverend Richard Chartres welcomed six other faith leaders to the celebration "of friendship and trust" at St. Ethelburga's, a London church transformed into a peace centre since it was bombed by the IRA in 1993. But senior Buddhists denounced the presence of Thaye Dorje, the 22-year-old who claims to be the living Buddha.
Bishop Chartres was inundated with angry letters and emails from Buddhists who insist that Thaye Dorje is the "failed candidate" and is not the real incarnation of the Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu Buddhist school. Urgyen Trinley, who is living in exile in India, is recognised by the Dalai Lama and most of the mainstream Tibetan Buddhist community as the genuine Karmapa.
The battle of succession, which has been raging for two , began after the death of the 16th Karmapa in 1981 when the traditional written instructions about where the next incarnation would appear could not be found.
In 1992, one of the four regents appointed to find a successor claimed to have discovered a letter of prophesy, and Urgyen Trinley was identified in Tibet the same year. With the approval of the Dalai Lama and most of the Karmapa's followers, he was installed near Lhasa in Tibet until he escaped over the mountains and arrived in India in 2001.
But the authenticity of the letter, and the role in the succession of the Dalai Lama, has never been accepted by the senior regent, Shamar, and in 1994 he announced that he had found his own young candidate, Thaye Dorje.
The supporters of the two lamas have since carried on a war of words on the streets, over the Internet and in the courts.
Bishop Chartres' office said that it "was appropriate" to welcome Thaye Dorje to the celebration "of friendship and trust." "We have no wish, however, to fuel the controversy around his lineage," it said.

Last summer, I produced a "TourWatch 2005" Tour de France viewing party at
Central Market in Austin, Texas and the Discovery Network's Travel Channel
sent a crew to produce a documentary on it. I also provided video footage
for this documentary and was one of the five fans featured in this
documentary.
In adddition to being a viewing party, this was Austin's first big
podcasting events and each day's highlights were carried on the Tour of
Texas website in the form of podcasts.
Many local Austin media outlets carried coverage of this event. On the
last day of the Tour de France several thousand people showed up to cheer
Lance on and sign several giant yellow cards that the Outdoor Life Network
brought to the event.
We finally have an air time for this documentary, here's the email I got
from producer Bill Delano.
Hey Ya´ll~ Tune in tomorrow night for my first film, "Chasing Lance: a
Fans Story"!!! Its a great show, was a thrilling adventure and will
forever stand as testament to what two friends can do with a camcorder,
computer, and a dream.
Here's the TV Guide sum up: Join five Americans on an emotion packed
thrill ride as they chase the Tour all around France supporting their
hero in his seventh and final ride. These are true fanatics who do far
more than vacation, they redefine what it means to be a true Fan.
Let everyone know and check it out on the Travel Channel on Thursday,
December 22 at 8 and 11pm EST (7 and 10 pm CST).
There will be more details on comment on this documentary at
http://touroftexas.com
and on
http://touroftexas.com/blog/
I'll soon have a special DVD available called the "The Making of Chasing
Lance" which will also be published as a video podcast on the Tour of
Texas. Let me know if you want to be on the notification list for this.
Hope you tune it to this show Thursday night.
