Server applications allow users to provide information concurrently
to multiple users as host-based systems. The information can
traverse various mediums, including File Transfer Protocol (FTP),
Gopher, the World Wide Web (WWW), and Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol (SMTP). Server apps are often called Daemons in the
UNIX world; those apps ported to Windows 3.x (or Windows NT)
or developed specifically for these platforms are more often labeled
servers. Running a server is often possible from a dynamic address,
but in reality, a server is only practical for fixed-address users. In
order to host your own web pages or offer your own information to
the world, obtaining a server is a necessity. The selected apps
below represent the best on the 'net. The following are brief
descriptions of each application featured on the

The new NT 4.0 beta incorporates a Web Servier (IIS), ftp and gopher thus
eliminating the need for third party apps in these areas. We've had
pretty good luck with NT Server so far.

FTP is no longer a default with IIS and the days of gopher are gone?

Not on Hawaii-on-Line You have the option of using windows and their programs or telnet and archie, lynx, pine, mirc, and gopher! Along with the other things that went with the internet's infancy. It is fun to mess aroung in there with that - and their telnet ftp program which I have never tried.

I go in every so often just to keep my skills/memory sharp. Hawaii-on-Line is so great because it was started by a group of Hams after Hurricane Iniki devastated Kauai. It has since been purchased by GST but run locally and is in the process of installing fiber optic technology. I would not consider abandoning them for anything! And, they protect my email like a mother tiger. While I was on the mainland for 4 months I asked my son to access it from his computer (he subscribed me the first time that way) to check for unforwarded mail. He though he knew my password but did not get it exactly right. Not only did they not let him in, they notified netcom.com - his ISP - that he was a hacker and netcom kicked him out of their service too! With the problems I have had with a certain hacker and the resulting grief which is still ongoing, I feel safe with HoL.
