Microsoft NetMeeting for Windows 95 -- NetMeeting is
Microsoft's attempt to capitalize on the ever popular Internet
communications market, specifically real-time audio-based
communications. With NetMeeting you can call people from around
the world using Microsoft's online user directory. Communication
can take place on several levels, including full or half-duplex audio
(depending on your sound card's capabilities), whiteboard
conferencing, application sharing, and text-based chatting.
Additionally, NetMeeting allows for files and sound clips to be
transferred between users. NetMeeting also continues the
'Favorites' motif found in its popular web browser, Internet
Explorer. Favorites are similar to bookmarked web sites, but in
NetMeeting they function as bookmarked callers that you can
quickly and easily call back. NetMeeting is foremost designed to be
a conferencing application, allowing groups of users (regardless of
location) to work together efficiently and productively. Perhaps one
of NetMeeting's strongest features in this area and definitely one of
its most unique is the ability to 'share' any application -- you can
work with another user from any location as long as the application
to be shared is running on at least one platform. Remote control of
an application is one feature you just have to see in order to
understand its importance to the 'net conferencing scene.
While NetMeeting is only in its initial beta release, aside from its
application sharing capabilities, it is still somewhat of a
disappointment considering its source. Relative to its competition,
NetMeeting is surprisingly slow and lacks many critical features.
VDOPhone's real-time video capabilities; Speak Freely and
Televox's advanced compression and encryption options; Internet
Phone and WebPhone's call waiting, caller ID support, and voice
mail; and CyberPhone and Speak Freely's cross-platform
compatibility are just a few of the superior features found in similar
product offerings. At this point in time, NetMeeting manages to
claim a spot in the middle of the pack for Internet Phone clients,
once again primarily for its superior conferencing features. Like
Televox, being a free application helps, but with so many strong
competitors, it will likely be tough for NetMeeting to carve out a
niche in a category that already includes so many popular clients.
The final analysis -- Microsoft will be hard-pressed to take
NetMeeting to the top of the class in this competitive market.

audio communication capabilities
Cons: Slow and buggy; lacks many important features found in
competitive products

The program is also supposed to work with PictureTel's LiveShare program which runs on their videoconferencing systems. This suggests a video capability may be coming soon; particularly since Microsoft bought into PictureTel.

We have some conferences set up to email folks stuff that gets posted,
but not this one. However, if you take the time to build your own
conference list. You only get to see the new stuff that's posted since
the last time you visited the conference. This software kind of grows on
you.

Amy and I are taking our first baby steps at using NetMeeting. In fact, we did a first today. We both posted a response in a conference topic interactively. You can find me at uls1.microsoft.com most of the time and, if you're an html coder or system a
dmin type, we may be able to work collaborately on some project on the Spring using Netmeeting.
I was blown away this morning to wake up, bleary eyed, walk over to my computer and see someone else working on it (it was Amy). At first I really thought that I had entered the twilight zone!
This *is* the current killer app!

I've only really just begun to use netmeeting. As a programmer, being able to work with the others in my team at any time is important. I haven't really done any extensive work with netmeeting, but the sample work I have done with 2 other members of my
team prove to be useful. However, the constant "bickering" over control is going to be a hassle.

I've found that too. Amy and I were literally having a wrestling match
over the cursor in our session the other day. But it's also been extremely
useful to be able to talk to colleagues, work interactively on applications,
draw on a whitebaord and engage in text chat all at the same time.
It's pretty awesome when you think about it.

I feel that netmeeting can help companies with a small budget cut some of their long distance and traveling expences. As a Internet Publisher I have customers all over and traveling to their offices and long distance costs can take it toll on budget. I
use email whenever possible but sometimes you need to interact on a project more closely then that and thats when I like to use neetmeeting. It lets us look at the same thing at the same time and make changes together. It can be cumbersome if your are j
st using a 28.8 KB modem but most of our customers have our load balanced servers and are running at 57.6 KB or higher so it tends to run pretty smooth. Overall if you and the people you are conferencing with have the bandwidth it makes a lot of sense t
o use netmeeting as much as possible.

I don't know the answer right off the bat, but I'll look

Important - Look for an annoucement of an *add on product*
for NetMeeting here soon. It's an interface that will connection
NetMeeting to your home telephone or to a mobile radio in
your car or cellular phone.

I have recently discovered netmeeting and in a few days time have worked through all the versions,,,now in Beta2. One re accuring question of mine is how do I get the speed dial to work?? All I ever see in the pull down menu is greyed out choices...In the
first version,,,as I was stumbling around I looked at it and the callers were already logged. What do I need to do....Perhaps you, or Microsoft need to have a person hooked in to each uls to guide us novices through!

I am a Web Publisher, I create mostly commercial web sites. My clients are from all around Indiana. Email and Netmeeting are my main lanes of communication with these clients. We use two server for our websites, a local one and our actual Web server.
I work on the local server and when I am ready I mirror the information to the Web server. I use Netmeeting to let my clients see the work locally on my machine for finalization before major mirrors. If you would like to see some examples of my work th

Well I have been very interested in using netmeeting for work.
I am an applications engineer for solidworks (a CAD pakage)
this is just the thing to make life lots easyer.
BUT it doesn't seem to work under NT4.0 I like what I see but it is just not there yet
Is the full version going to support NT??

Dear Terry;
I am the foreign trade manager of a "Computer Solution Concepts - Beckdata".
Our headquarters is in Istanbul, Turkey. As you can imagine I am not a computer genie. I use my pc in order to fulfill my responsibilities at work and I like it. My reason to get started with Netmeeting is very unique:
I deal with a number of technology producing companies all around the world. I
have to make at least 20 intl.' calls a day. Last week I received an e-mail from an imports representative. This japanese lady was asking me, because of curriosity, was may company doing financially so well that we were calling them everyday; rather than
using Netmeeting.
She was right. Since than I am giving at least 2 hours a day in order to learn it.
Unfortunately I am praying to succeed in voice contact.
I could not find anybody using netmeeting in Turkey. Even Microsoft Turkey could not assist me. That's way I am looking for some help in the internet arena.

I'm working on an idea to use NM to enable relatives round the world to videomeet (I take my machine to their home here in UK and arrange similar for their relatives abroad - e.g. old folks here - grandchildren abroad maybe?)
Quality not quite there yet but with 56kbps coming and using a fast pentium I believe it to be viable.
I can also and have many times sent video to two other users simultaneously - not sure if more than two (i.e. conference of 4 or more)is possible but still trying.
Any useful comments welcome.

It's possible to have more than two, but I'm not sure how well the audio holds up, it shouldn't be a problem.

In reference to the question about multiple voices in conferece, Netmeeting appears to support only the first two people in a conference with voice. The others who join the conference can share and collaborate applications, but not voice.
I find that NM 2.0 Beta1 often crashes when I do some things in Internet Explorer. Haven't been able to make it happen under controlled circumstances so I haven't reported it as a Beta problem.
I have been using Netmeeting to play Scrabble as a shared application with voice. Works great. I am amazed at the speed of the screen updates and the cursor motion.
Scrabble anyone?

Just a word of introduction. I run a small business of my own here in Poland, we are CAD/CAM/CAE specialists in the mechanical industry with special interest in plastics. We are the Polish VAR for Computervision (a high-end CAD/CAM package called CADDS 5)
and the Polish Distributor for Moldflow (plastic injection analysis software). I have been using NetMeeting for a couple of weeks now, but frankly, not for business purposes. Rather making friends...
However, I do see a lot of opportunities for using NM in my business once the Internet is matured in Poland. Before that, I can imagine using its features in my professional contacts with Computervision and Moldflow, but they haven't adopted it yet, or at
least I don't know about it...

that do 3 dimensional modeling. I know about them through my website
authoring business. One of these is http://www.acceltechinc.com and

that does stuff similar to what Accelerated Technologies does.

Hello! I'v found Net Meeting very interesting. I don't use it as a business tool and, in fact, i didn't realise about this feature. I live in Spain, and i use it to chat with people wo live very far from me, like Tokio, US, Australia. I'm only very impressed by the possibility of talking with them.

Hello Terry,
I've just downloaded NM beta2 yesterday. Some new features are available from beta2, but sadly my PC cannot afford to run some of them. ( My PC is sub-note type and has a little old-fashioned CPU, i486 DX2.)
I think it very useful and fun to use NM on the internet. I'm now using it to communicate many people around the world.
I plan to buy new PC this coming January. Please give some advices;
1) What is important to run NM or IE quickly?
2) Which is better, desktop-type or laptop-type?

I just downloaded MN2.0b2 the other day and was messing about when you saw me.
Thanks for the invitation to join up. I didn't get NM for business purposes. I have relatives living in Germany and NM is the third internet phone program that we have used to save money on international calls. We first were using Cyberphone and for some reason it started giving us some problems. We then went to TeleVox which worked better, but they were having problems on their end and suggested we try NM. After loading it the other day, I found out their server was down and so we haven't had the opportu
ity to try the voice capabilities yet. I'm thinking of getting a new 16 bit full duplex sound card to replace my old Soundblaster Pro. Any recommendations? I may contact some of my fellow Respond distributors around the US who are on line and see if this may help in getting info around our association. Respond Systems is an OSHA compliance company providing service, training, and products to keep our customers out of harms (OSHA) way. Look forward to talking to you later.

It seems I have triggered the Christmas Holidays wishes - didn't suppose new messages arrive so often here taht it was far too early!
Anyway, I have two points:
1. NM 2 Beta 2 is ABSOLUTELY not stable. Have used Beta 1 without freezings, problems with logging or reading the ULS's etc.
2. In the area that NM has advantages over other Internet telephony programs (sharing appps, video etc.) - well, one has to have a really fast machine and connection. Otherwise it's just a pie in the sky

OK,
So most of you like NetMeeting. That puts me in the minority. So far I have found it to be rather ineffective with the audio. I tried vers. 1 and quickly updated to beta 2. I am conducing test with some colleagues over a very high speed line (10 MB) and still the sound breaks up. The couple of calls from other places that I have accepted were disassters-- audio un-intelligible.
Here is what I have found out so far-- it seems the full-duplex capability causes more problems (echos, unintential drop outs) than half duplex. So don't spend your money on a full-duplex sound card just for netmeeting. On the other hand, the video is OK and the white board is nice. The application sharing is where I think this app is most useful. However, it would be better if the audio didn't suffer when you were sharing an application that took considerable horsepower. And beware anything less
han a Pentium processor (I mean at the other end.) It will be rather slow.

Thanks for the invitation to participate. The jury is still out on NetMeeting as far as I am concerned. I do not believe that Beta2 has the same stability as Beta1 offered. One of the more frustrating things is that communicating in North America works well however the success rate in working voice into eastern Europe leaves a little to be desired. Sometimes it comes back with the note that the party at the other end is not running NetMeeting and other times advises that the party does not have audio.
This is difficult when you know for a fact they are running the same program and same version of it. Will keep you posted what longer term thoughts are. Season Greetings from Canada

I like Netmeeting. Is the only program of this kind that I use on my PC. I've known several people there and meet some friends. Me gusta y lo encuentro interesante.

I tried to hook up to Amy today but it wouldn't connect perhaps because
she is still running 1.0 and I'm running the latest beta. I tend to
agree that the reliability and compatibility has gone down and hopefully
there will be a more bulletproof release soon.

Terry, thanks for the invitation to the conference. I enjoy NetMeeting but just downloaded the Beta 2 version a few moments ago. I'll let you know how that goes. Sound quality is very poor, but it's my sound card...not top of the line ya know. When I try the tuning wizard, i get a message telling me my card is not compatible and I may not be able to use the audio feature. Well,I use it anyway, other folks can hear me just fine...need to upgrade that sound card one day!! I can see how the file sharin
/colabirate will come in handy...especially when working with a new spreadsheet that others need to learn.
I enjoy it for the chatting as well...trying to get my brother and nephew on it but they can't seem to get it to work in AOL. Any thoughts.

hi from italy! I have no experience with NetMeeting - unfortunately I have no time to dedicate to this interesting institution. I would like to test it and after present it on our fair from january 20th to january 24th.

If MS (Tim Schreck!!!) doesn't respond to this message, I am coming back to
Netscape as the default browser and WebPhone as the conference - telephony
tool. For those of you who share my opinion, here is the link to another
MS-independent stuff that works absolutely perfect - and is free, too:

further information on your configuration and your machine, modem brand etc.,
Pentium, amt. of ram, etc.
Note that most people are running it OK so it becomes a matter of finding
out why it doesn't mix with your machine.

I have been posting messages on Beta 2 behaviour for weeks. Apart from
freezing and alike (it always comes up again, so forget it), I NEVER am
able to read the whole ULS directory. The process of "connecting to..."
ends with entries beginning with "a" or "b" and Beta 2 displays it's
usual idle state "not in a call" message.
I reinstalled Windows, IE 3.01 and NetMeeting - still the same problem.
Maybe somebody from MS could answer what I should do?

PS.
The only advantage that NM is offering over other conferencing stuff is
aplication sharing. But be frank - with most of our connection and machines
speed, it is good maybe for viewing xxx-pics, nothing else... I certainly
cannot share the CAE Moldflow software with my customers, even though some
of them have 128 ISDN connections and Pentium Pro 200 machines. So, unless
MS responds, forget the NM and leave it for the many gays and lesbians
oh-so-wet and hard and lusty out there on the ULS servers!

The product from Mirabilis I recommended in my last message is called ICQ and is an excellnet toll to monitor who of your pals is online at any given moment. Terry, I have sent you the link to their download page, but you haven't loaded or installed it! Please do - it's realy worth it...
What is specially appealing about ICQ is that once you spot one of your friends on line, you can:
chat with him
send him e message
transfer a file or whole URL
invoke any of the teleconferencing programs you and he/she has installed (NM, WebPhone, VDOPhone, Cu-Seeme etc)
And, it's FREE!
Once you have it, please let me know and maybe set up a discussion forum about it

ICQ is enough of a killer app to have it's own topic and, in fact,
Forrest has done just that. He has set up a topic for it. I believe
it's 333 on the topic list. Would you enter some comments there to kick
off a discussion. Our Spring workgroup is now using ICQ after an attempt
to use NetMeeting. We'll revisit NetMeeting at the next release and see
if it's more stable, more reliable and more intuitive.
ICQ is limited in functionality but it's rock solid at connecting folks up.

I have been using NetMeeting for a short time (1 month or so) and it use to be relatively easy to log on into a server. But nowadays, it is almost impossible to log on into any server.
Does anybody else is experiencing the same problem? Has anybody heard anything regarding upgrades of the servers capacity?

I checked it out. You really don't want to see me on your monitor - at least first thing in the morning - and I do not have the camera involved, but are you sure enough for me to download another program with which to commune with you? How does this differ from the three types of Instant Messaging programs already in place?

You don't download webex, it runs in a browser window, you just have to fill out their form at http://www.webex.com and request a demo.

Was that you on the webex with me? And Conrad? Beware, the spread sheets took me by surprise and I was not ready - along with inhouse interference which made me get out of the demo. It works well, but I think IM works much more easily though do not know about haveing other than 2 people at a time. Btw, is the 402 area code a toll call and where is the location. That can be debilitating from Hawaii to the east coast for 45 minutes!

There really is not much I want to return for. The whiteboard (what they call the message board) is straight-forward and easy to use but, so are others.
As soon as I eat some thing so my brain is in gear, I'll try the netmeeting download and let you know when I am ready for a test run (provided I am not needed elsewhere this morning...)

Last night I downloaded and installed ICQ and remembered why I deleted it previously - everything was working like it was stuck in glue. May have to uninstall it again, but I need to talk to someone in the dark of night when the rest of the world is gone from Spring...

I am most disappointed - and concerned. It will not install NetMeeting 4.0 on my computer unless they install IE 4.0 here as well. Is this absolutely necessary? I like netscape. I have generations of excellent bookmarks on my Netscape, programmed hot buttons on the task bar which takes me directly to the conference topics I use the most. Why would I want to install IE 4.0???

When I click on the install file a box pops up saying it cannot be used without IE being installed and it could not find IE on this computer.

Hmm, I guess then it must be a prereq. Usually IE is on most Windows systems by default.

Nope! None at all. I deleted every last bit of the program by hand to get rid of it. Perhaps I should download that again when/if I can ever get Norton Utilities to allow me to get online.
