ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Conrad J. Storad, Editor/Science & Nature Writer
Director, ASU Office of Research Publications
Arizona State University, Tempe Arizona
email: cstorad@asu.edu

Conrad J. Storad currently is director of the Office of Research
Publications at Arizona State University. His duties include editing and
writing for the nationally award winning ASU Research Magazine, which he
has done for the past 12 years. He is also the founding editor of Chain
Reaction Magazine, a new ASU publication produced in the quality
tradition of ASU Research, but written, designed, and illustrated for a middle
school student readership.

In addition to his ASU duties, Storad is the author of many science and
nature books for children and young adults. Several of those books are
the result of a creative collaboration with Phoenix graphic artist Donna S.
Atwood. In 1997, Storad and Atwood pooled talents to create and publish
Sonoran Desert A to Z, a coloring/learning book targeted at children of
all ages, 2 to 92. Storad also is the author of books for young readers
published by Lerner Publications of Minneapolis, Minn. Titles in print
include three titles in Lerner's Early Bird Nature Book Series:  Saguaro
Cactus, Scorpions, and Tarantulas. Currently in press is AIDS: HIV
Attacks the Immune System, a book that discusses the biology of AIDS for teens
and young adults.

Prior to working at ASU, Storad worked as a reporter, editor, and
general manager for The Barberton Herald newspaper in northeast Ohio, as a
science/medical writer for the U.S. National Cancer Institute, a
freelance magazine writer, and as a science writer at Kent State University. He
earned degrees in journalism and environmental science from the
University of Akron in 1979, and a master's degree in mass communication/science
journalism from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of
Journalism in 1983. He is a member of the National Association of
Science Writers, the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, the
International Association of Business Communicators, and has served two
terms as president of the University Research Magazine Association.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Donna S. Atwood, Principal
Donna Atwood Design, Phoenix, Arizona

Donna S. Atwood is the principal for Donna Atwood Design in Phoenix,
which she began in 1981. Active as a commercial artist and designer for more
than 20 years, Atwood has earned many regional and national awards for her
design work. Since 1987, she has specialized in design and illustration
for the gift industry.

In 1994, Atwood combined her design talents with Tempe writer Conrad J.
Storad to produce Grow & Tell: A Introduction to Gardening for Children
which was published as part of a product developed by Phoenix-based
Aquapore Moisture Systems. The book earned national honors from the
several professional communication organizations, including the Society for
Technical Communication, and the International Association of Business
Communicators (IABC). In September 1997, Atwood and Storad teamed again
to publish Sonoran Desert A to Z, a coloring/learning book for readers of
all ages, 2 to 92. Atwood also designed a set of Sonoran Desert A to Z
notecards and currently is developing other gift items. Items in the
Sonoran Desert A to Z collection currently are available at more than
125 stores and gift shops across Arizona.
